Last year, something magical happened in Midtown Detroit. We gathered at the International Institute for KlezMitten … Michigan’s first even Klezmer Festival! And the response blew me away. We sold out, packing the hall with music lovers, dancers, and families — all there to celebrate the lively, soulful and deeply human sound of Klezmer. The energy was electric, and the feedback from attendees was incredible.
That’s why I am so excited to announce that KlezMitten is back for its second year, bigger and better than before. On Sunday, September 7, we return to the International Institute in Midtown Detroit for a full afternoon of Yiddish joy, musical connection, and community celebration.
Among the many benefits to bringing back KlezMitten — in additional officially anointing it as the Second Annual — has been the opportunity to reflect on all the changes in my world since the First. This past year has been full of incredible memories and meaningful accomplishments, both personally and professionally.
I have continued my work as the band director at Bloomfield Hills High School, where I’m constantly inspired by my students. Our Jazz Ensemble earned 2nd runner-up at the Central Michigan University Jazz Weekend in Class A, and all of our ensembles received superior ratings at Michigan School Band and Orchestra festivals. These achievements reflect the dedication and passion of our young musicians. Go Blackhawks!
At home, Michelle and I are soaking in every moment as our boys enter kindergarten and 3rd grade at Angell Elementary in Berkley. Watching them grow has been one of life’s greatest joys. Outside of school and family, I’ve also embraced my role as a captain in the Partners of Torah Jewish Hockey League. This winter, our team brought home the coveted Elijah’s Cup — our first championship! The league continues to be an amazing source of camaraderie, fun, and Jewish connection. Go Shticks and Pucks!
Back toKlezMitten. This year we’re expanding from four bands to seven, giving festival-goers an even richer variety of sounds, styles, and grooves to experience.
Here’s our 2025 lineup:
- Heartland Klezmorim – Lansing
- Klezmephonic – Ann Arbor
- Klezundheit – Metro Detroit
- Schmaltz – Ann Arbor
- 7Layers – Detroit
- Klezmer Academy – Metro Detroit
- Chutzpah – Grand Rapids
One of the things I’m most proud of is the debut of Klezmer Academy, a group that I had the privilege to start and direct this past year. We brought together ten high school students from across Metro Detroit who met every Sunday morning at Temple Beth El to dive into the world of Klezmer. They learned not only the technical skills but also the history, soul and emotion behind the music.
We performed locally at Temple Beth El, and at All Seasons retirement communities in Birmingham and West Bloomfield, where residents danced in their seats and shared their own memories of Jewish music. Watching these students grow into confident Klezmer players has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, and I can’t wait for them to share their sound with our festival audience.
This year, we’re offering new ticket options to make the festival even more accessible. You can purchase a ticket for a set of three bands if you can’t make the full day, or grab a discounted pass to stay for the whole experience. We’re also introducing a special VIP section — right up front and directly in front of the dance floor with a direct view of the bands.
KlezMitten is more than just a concert — it’s a gathering of community, culture, and shared history. It’s about both preserving and evolving the tradition of Klezmer music, all while creating new memories together. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer, a new listener, or someone who grew up with these melodies in the background of family celebrations, this festival is for you.
